  • Problem: A boiler produces saturated steam at atmospheric pressure.
  • Key step: For state one, the feed water, we know the temperature at state one is 160.
  • Watch out: And we don't know the temperature, but we do know that it's saturated steam.
  • Result: So one boiler horsepower equals 33,470 B2 per hour.
  • ✅ Answer: D

Q: For Practice Exam 1 #73, when is delta h = cp delta T appropriate, and is it safe to replace the turbine-efficiency entropy/quality workflow with a shortcut using h vaporization?
A: Delta h = cp delta T is appropriate when there is no phase change and the specific heat can reasonably be treated as constant, which is why it works well for subcooled liquid water but is less trustworthy across large vapor temperature ranges. For the turbine efficiency part, Dan was not comfortable endorsing the h vaporization shortcut and recommended using the standard isentropic path with entropy, quality, and the ideal enthalpy.
